Pittville Pump Room is just one of the many rare gems left over from Cheltenham's hey-day - its Regency period. It was built for wealthy landowner and MP, Sir Joseph Pitt, and with its elegant colonnade of Ionic columns based on the Temple on the Illissus at Athens, it remains today the very epitome of style, obviating the fact that it was built with money and taste.
The Pump Rooms are surrounded by sweeping lawns studded with bright trees and flowers. The building, dating from around 1825 is Grade I listed.
Visitors to The Pump Rooms can still enjoy the Spa water which made the town so famous, although it is no longer hand pumped the original marble and scagliola pump is still used but has been converted to enable the water to be drawn from the 80ft well by electronic methods.
The Pump Rooms are a 'must see' for anyone visiting Cheltenham. A short walk away lies Cheltenham's famous racecourse, home to the world renowned Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival.
